Q. What was your motivation to write Anamika?
A. To explore the complicated ways in which relations between men and women can develop. Anamika’s love for her husband is unconditional. Her contract with Abdul is part and parcel of that love. When Abdul realizes that he knows he cannot have Anamika while Abhi is alive, he loses in more ways than one.
Q. What were reasons for setting the plot in pre-Independence India?
A. The reason for setting the story in the period of Gardi, mid-eighteenth century when chaos ruled in north India is to heighten the notion that no rules were being followed and no one could judge wrong and right. Each person had to make their own decision when all the norms had been broken. Anamika realizes that and survives.
Q. Who is your favourite character in the book? And why?
A. My favourite character is Nadya. She has been through a long life of hardship and constant moving from one royal master to another. Over the course of the story, she realizes that she is much smarter than the men who own her. This is when she frees herself, thanks to the chaos all around.
